Personal and Professional Context
My tenure was during the 25th Anniversary of TCWSE. I had begun a new chapter in my life in a big urban district which was quite a jump from a small 3A district. The job was a direct result of the nurturing and networking from summer conferences and regional meetings. That year my learning curve was spiraling! I was most excited to be your president; however, to think about following in the footsteps of past presidents was a bit daunting! Remembering conversations from other members, I heard the phrase so many times: We stand on the shoulders of others. With the help of past presidents, my cabinet, and membership, we had a successful year.
My major goal as your president was our 25th anniversary. Many of you may not remember or know that we had a dedication and celebration of our archives at the Women’s Collection section of the Texas Women’s University library. I can’t believe we are now celebrating 30 years! My, how time flies. When I think about the planning for that occasion, I remember reading about our founding mothers and their vision to have an organization focused on women and their careers. What a privilege to hear the same women reminisce about starting TCWSE but more importantly, how to keep improving on the organization.
Reflecting Back
In trying to write about TCWSE and my year as president, it was hard to begin to write. So many thoughts of previous years clouded my thinking. I couldn’t sort through the joys, sorrows, accomplishments that I have shared with this organization. Searching for inspiration (or perhaps a swift kick in the pants), I read this quote from Leonardo da Vinci:
I love those who can smile in trouble, who can gather strength from distress, and grow brave by reflection. ‘Tis the business of little minds to shrink, but they whose heart is firm, and whose conscience approves their conduct, will pursue their principles unto death.
These words speak to my experience with TCWSE for I have shared smiles in struggles, gathered strength from distress, and grown brave by reflecting with ALL OF YOU!
Looking Forward
My hope and goal for our future would be to reach out to the vast number of women who are still surprised when they discover TCWSE. Our name, vision, and membership information needs to be available to all women aspiring to further their careers. As members we must be vigilant in seeking women who have potential, bring them into the fold, and assist them toward their career goals.
No other organization empowers women like TCWSE! From my first conference until my retirement, TCSWE has nurtured me through each step of my career. Taking a song from my Girl Scout days — “Make new friends, but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold.” I look forward with great anticipation to see where we are led with new people joining and our “old” friends’ wisdom.
Thank you TCWSE for your love and nurturing. I can’t wait for the next 30 years!
