The Texas Council of Women School Executives (TCWSE) is proud to announce the appointment of Dr. Christie Whitbeck-Lazenby as its first executive director, effective immediately.
Dr. Whitbeck-Lazenby brings over four decades of distinguished leadership in Texas public education. She served over seven years as a superintendent in both Bryan ISD and Fort Bend ISD, and held key leadership roles in Alvin ISD and Katy ISD.
“Celebrating 40 years of TCWSE, we believe this is a monumental time in our organization and are thrilled to have Dr. Whitbeck-Lazenby lead us as our first executive director,” said Dr. Martha Salazar-Zamora, TCWSE president and Tomball ISD superintendent. “Her passion for mentoring and empowering women aligns perfectly with our mission and her deep understanding of the unique challenges and opportunities facing women in school leadership makes her the ideal person to guide our organization forward.”
Dr. Whitbeck-Lazenby’s extensive and varied experience across the educational landscape makes her uniquely relatable to TCWSE’s membership, which spans all levels of educational leadership. She began her career as a classroom teacher and throughout her 40-year career held roles as a campus principal at all three levels, central office leader, and ultimately superintendent in diverse districts.
“We are confident that Dr. Whitbeck-Lazenby’s career progression has given her a comprehensive perspective on the challenges and opportunities that women face throughout their professional journeys,” said Dr. Salazar-Zamora. “Her ability to connect with all members at every stage of leadership — from aspiring administrators to seasoned superintendents — will be a powerful asset to the organization.”
Dr. Whitbeck-Lazenby has been an active member of TCWSE since the early 2000s and was most recently honored with TCWSE’s prestigious Margret Montgomery Leadership Award, recognizing her exemplary leadership and dedication to supporting professionalism for women in education. Her career is marked by a steadfast commitment to student success, equity, and the advancement of women in educational leadership.
Founded in 1984, TCWSE is a premier leadership organization committed to supporting and advancing women in educational leadership throughout Texas. Through an active statewide network, the organization promotes equity in leadership, provides mentorship and professional development, and creates platforms for women’s voices to be heard and valued at all levels of educational leadership.
As executive director, Dr. Whitbeck-Lazenby will work closely with the organization’s Executive Board to oversee TCWSE’s strategic initiatives, including professional development programs, leadership conferences, and mentorship opportunities aimed at fostering a strong, inclusive community of support for members across Texas. The position demands both a deep connection to the profession and a forward-looking mindset — qualities Dr. Whitbeck-Lazenby exemplifies.
“I am deeply honored to serve TCWSE in this new capacity,” said Dr. Whitbeck-Lazenby. “Throughout my career, I have been committed to uplifting women in education. I look forward to growing the organization and collaborating with our members to continue building pathways for women to lead and thrive in educational settings.”
